What’s New at the Drug-Drug Interaction (DDI) SIG?

Quarterly Journal Clubs

The DDI SIG hosts quarterly journal clubs, offering a platform for sharing and discussing the latest DDI research. In December 2023, Dr. Macarius Donneyong shared his experience using “A data mining approach for the discovery of potentially high- and low-risk high-order drug combinations from real world data.” In March 2024, Dr. Antonios Douros delivered a compelling talk on “Time-Varying Exposure Definitions in Drug-Drug Interactions,” using real-world examples to illustrate the design. In June 2024, Dr. Sungho Bae presented his recent publication on the impact of combining Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors with Overactive Bladder Drugs on urinary tract infection risk, which received high praise.

Recent Related Publication

Following last year’s journal club, Dr. Waad Alghamdi published her findings on "Signal Detection and Assessment of Herb–Drug Interactions: Saudi Food and Drug Authority Experience," exploring herb-drug interactions from a regulatory perspective. Another useful review article on “Methodological Considerations on the Use of Cohort Designs in Drug-Drug Interaction Studies in Pharmacoepidemiology” was also shared by Dr. Antonios Douros during his presentation.

Upcoming Events at ISPE 2024

At the upcoming ISPE 2024, DDI SIG members Drs. Katsiaryna Bykov, Joshua Gagne, Macarius Donneyong, and Todd Miano will present a DDI SIG-endorsed symposium focused on the challenges and potential solutions in data mining for DDIs. This symposium will be invaluable for anyone interested in DDI pharmacoepidemiology and general principles of data mining. Additionally, the DDI SIG will feature a Spotlight poster session and host an in-person meeting, providing excellent networking and collaboration opportunities for members.

Ongoing Activities and Member Engagement

Our SIG offers an engaging platform for members to share insights, discuss methods, and exchange publications in the field of DDIs. We regularly share new publications on ISPE Exchange/Twitter, invite speakers to present their research, and support ongoing research efforts. If you are interested in drug-drug interactions, join our DDI SIG on ISPE Exchange and stay tuned for more exciting activities. Together, we can advance the understanding of drug-drug interactions.

Become part of our community and contribute to the growing body of knowledge in drug-drug interactions. We are also seeking expressions of interest for the position of DDI SIG secretary for the forthcoming year (Sep 2024 - Aug 2025). This is a great opportunity for any DDI researchers (all levels welcome) who want to get more involved with the SIG and this evolving area of pharmacoepidemiology. If interested, please get in touch with the Chair or Vice Chair via email (Alice: alicechencheng@gmail.com; John: hughesjo@tcd.ie).
