ISPE Annual Call for Awards

ISPE annually issues a call for award nominations for the following:
Judith K. Jones Award for Impact on Public Health through Pharmacoepidemiology
Emerging Leader Award
Sustained Service to ISPE
ISPE Sustained Scientific Excellence Award and Lecture

Please see below for detailed instructions for each award, including how to apply.

Judith K. Jones Award for Impact on Public Health through Pharmacoepidemiology
The Judith K. Jones Award recognizes an individual making a demonstratable impact on public health through work in the area of pharmacoepidemiology. The individual must reside and work in a country ranked lower than "Very High Human Development" by the UN Human Development Index (http://hdr.undp.org/en/composite/HDI). Up to two awards may be granted in each year but the award may not necessarily be granted every year.

Selection process

  • A call for nomination is announced during the ISPE Annual Meeting and immediately afterward on the ISPE website. This call will encourage ISPE members to nominate colleagues including those who may not have established connections to ISPE. The nomination process may rely on active ISPE members to propose deserving candidates.
  • Nominees do not have to be active ISPE members, but their work must focus on an area consistent with pharmacoepidemiology.
  • Nominees must have demonstrated public health impact in a country ranked lower than "very high human development" through their work in pharmacoepidemiology. Such impact could be achieved through:
    • Consistent contributions of evidence that guides public health interventions,
    • Training and mentorship to build capacity in pharmacoepidemiology or,
    • other leadership positions that have impacted public health through the application of pharmacoepidemiology.
  • Females are preferred for this award, however, a well-deserving male nominee will not be excluded from consideration.

The nominee's track record will normally show a sustained public health impact through work in the area of pharmacoepidemiology over several years and demonstrate the potential to foster relationships with ISPE on a broader level (e.g., by connecting others in the nominee's institution to ISPE).

Following recommendation by the Fellowship and Awards Committee, the Board will select the awardee. Previous recipients are ineligible, as are individuals who work and reside in countries considered "Very High Human Development" by the UN Human Development Index.

Nominations

  • Can be made by any ISPE member.
  • Nominations must include: the nominee's CV; a letter justifying the nomination, including the nominee's contribution to public health, potential to foster relationships with ISPE and relevance to pharmacoepidemiology; and two letters of recommendation recognizing the nominee's impactful work from individuals of the nominee's country.

Submit nomination letters and supporting documents by email to the executive office at info@pharmacoepi.org by the deadline.

The award consists of a plaque; waiver of annual meeting registration fee; and travel support to attend the annual meeting when the award is to be conferred. The awardee must normally be present at the annual meeting to receive the award.

Emerging Leader Award
The ISPE Emerging Leader Award recognizes ISPE members who have shown, early in their careers, the potential for leadership and have already made significant contributions to the Society. Only one award can be granted to each year.

  • Nominees must be a member in good standing (membership is current).
  • Nominees must have between 2 and 7 years of membership in the Society
  • Nominees must have demonstrated entrepreneurship and leadership within the Society; specific examples must be provided.
  • The nomination must include a statement indicating the reason for nomination and the nominee's CV.
  • Previous recipients and FISPEs are not eligible for this award.

The following examples are provided for guidance:

  • Spearheading the development of an important, concerted ISPE document
  • Establishing or further developing an important new initiative within ISPE, such as a student's night out, new member luncheon, mentor program, or newcomer track.
  • Establishing or further developing a major new SIG, committee, or Regional Interest Group.

The online application form is here: https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/7562484/ISPE-Emerging-Leader-Nominations-2024

Nominations are not accepted by any other channels or means. Please use only the online process.

The award consists of a plaque and waiver of the annual meeting registration fee when the award is to be conferred. The awardee must normally be present at the annual meeting to receive the award.

Sustained Service to ISPE
The Sustained Service to ISPE recognition is granted to individuals who have given significant and sustained service to ISPE and who fulfill the following criteria:

  • FISPEs who have been members of the Society for at least 12 years, altogether. These 12 years of membership need not be consecutive.
  • Indicate to the Fellowship and Awards Committee that they are retired, or about to retire professionally (irrespective of whether they continue to consult, teach, or do research part-time).
  • Indicate to the Fellowship and Awards Committee that they are unlikely to attend any more ISPE Annual Meetings.
  • Have continued their service to ISPE post FISPE. This would include:
    • Regular attendance at ISPE's Annual Meeting
    • Provision of advice to ISPE through regular participation in activities of ISPE, including the Board, Committees, Council, SIGs, or task forces. It may also include representing ISPE at other fora
    • Guidance and/or mentorship to younger ISPE members.

Recipients of the Sustained Service to ISPE are encouraged to continue their engagement with ISPE and are eligible for retired member status.

The award consists of a plaque and waiver, upon application, of the annual meeting registration fee when the award is to be conferred. The awardee must normally be present at the annual meeting to receive the award.

If you would like to be considered for the Sustained Service Award, or to nominate a Fellow, please send an email to the executive office at info@pharmacoepi.org by the deadline.
